AppSumo Review 2026: Is It Actually Worth It?

Disclosure: SAASTOOLY earns a commission when you buy through some of the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend, and you will find plenty of "don't buy this" advice below.

Every few weeks someone asks us the same question in slightly different words: is AppSumo actually a good deal, or is it a clearance bin for software nobody wants?

The honest answer is both, depending entirely on how you buy.

We have been tracking lifetime deals for years and currently list 500+ of them on this site. That gives us a reasonable view of what happens after the launch buzz fades — which tools are still shipping updates three years later, and which ones quietly stopped answering support tickets.

This review covers what AppSumo is, how the money actually works, where the real risk sits, and the filter we use before spending a cent. If you want the short version: AppSumo is legitimate and can be extraordinarily profitable, but only for buyers with a filter. Without one, it is an expensive hobby.

What AppSumo actually is

AppSumo is a marketplace where early-stage software companies sell one-time licences instead of monthly subscriptions. Founded by Noah Kagan in Austin in 2010, it has been running for over fifteen years.

The economics are simpler than most people assume. It is a trade between two parties with different problems:

  • The software company needs cash and users right now. A seed-stage SaaS with 200 customers can raise a few hundred thousand dollars in a matter of weeks, plus a flood of public reviews and real usage data — without giving up equity.
  • You need tools without a stack of recurring bills. You pay once, typically 80–95% below what the subscription would cost over three years.

Both sides are giving something up. The company trades away future recurring revenue from those customers. You trade away the safety of buying from an established vendor. If the model itself is new to you, start with our primer on what a SaaS lifetime deal is and the fuller breakdown of lifetime deals versus subscriptions.

That trade is the entire review. Everything below is about whether it lands in your favour.

How AppSumo makes money — and why it matters to you

AppSumo takes a cut of each deal sold. That has one direct consequence worth understanding: AppSumo is incentivised to list deals, not to guarantee they survive.

This is not a criticism, just the structure. Curation exists — there is a review process, and the Select badge marks tools AppSumo has more confidence in — but no marketplace can promise that a two-year-old startup will still exist in 2030.

Anyone reviewing AppSumo without saying this plainly is selling you something. The platform is not the risk. The vendors are. We go deeper into that distinction in Is AppSumo Legit?

The refund policy: your single most important feature

This is the part that changes the maths, and most buyers underuse it.

Most AppSumo deals come with a 60-day money-back guarantee. The refund window is set per product and stated in the Deal Terms on each listing — usually 60 days, sometimes 30, and some listings such as digital downloads cannot be refunded at all. Check the Deal Terms before you buy; that is the only place the real number lives. We walk through the exact process, screen by screen, in our guide to the AppSumo refund policy.

Within the window, you can request a refund for any reason from your account dashboard. You do not need to argue with support or justify yourself. The refund goes back to your original payment method.

Here is what most people miss: the refund still applies after you have redeemed the code with the vendor. You are not gambling $69 on a demo video. You are getting 60 days of real use, inside your actual workflow, with your actual data. (If codes and tiers are unfamiliar territory, see how AppSumo codes and stacking work.)

Used properly, that turns every purchase into a paid trial you can walk away from. Used improperly — buying, forgetting, and rediscovering the tool eight months later — it is worthless.

The one habit that pays for itself: set a calendar reminder for day 50 of every purchase. If you have not used the tool in a real project by then, refund it. This single rule is worth more than any deal-picking advice in this article.

AppSumo Plus: run the numbers before you buy

AppSumo Plus costs $99 per year, billed annually. There is no monthly option. What you get:

Benefit What it means in practice
10% off every order Pays for itself at roughly $990 of annual spend on discount alone
$100 in coupons Delivered as four $25 coupons, one every 90 days — use them or lose them
1-year purchase protection on Select deals 100% refund in AppSumo Credits if the vendor shuts down within 12 months, versus 50% for non-members
Free KingSumo and SendFox Tier 1 For the length of the membership
The Sauce community access Private buyer community, roughly 27,000 members
Early access to Select deals Before they go public

Two things to know before you subscribe. First, the membership fee itself is non-refundable once rewards have been used, though individual deals you buy still carry their normal refund window. Second, it auto-renews annually.

Is it worth it? Do the arithmetic honestly rather than aspirationally:

  • Buying 2 deals a year at ~$59 each: you spend $118, save about $12 on the discount, and pocket the coupons only if you happen to buy in all four quarters. You are behind. Skip it.
  • Buying 4–5 deals a year: the coupons alone roughly cover the fee, and the discount plus purchase protection puts you clearly ahead.
  • Spending $1,000+ a year: the 10% discount pays the fee outright. Everything else is a bonus.

The break-even sits around three to four deals per year, assuming you actually redeem the coupons. Most people who buy Plus optimistically buy fewer deals than they planned to. Buy the membership after your buying pattern is established, not before — we run the full scenario maths in our AppSumo Plus review.

The Select badge and the shutdown question

The thing nobody wants to put in a headline: a meaningful share of lifetime deal tools do not survive long-term. Buyers who track large portfolios over multiple years consistently report somewhere in the range of 15% lost to shutdowns, with more retired voluntarily as better options appear.

That is not a reason to avoid AppSumo. It is a reason to price it in. Our write-up on the pros and cons of lifetime deals covers the trade in more detail.

If a tool costs $69 and would have cost $30 a month, it pays for itself in under three months. Even if it shuts down after two years, you are enormously ahead. The purchases that hurt are the ones you never integrated — and those hurt regardless of whether the company survived.

The Select badge is AppSumo's attempt to flag lower-risk vendors: more established, better-reviewed, more likely to still be here. Combined with Plus membership, Select deals carry 12-month purchase protection, which extends your effective evaluation window from two months to a year.

If you are risk-averse, restricting yourself to Select deals is a defensible strategy. You will pay more per tool and see fewer options, and you will also lose far less money.

The filter we use before buying anything

Four questions. If a deal fails any one of them, we pass. (For the long version, see our 10-point due diligence checklist.)

1. Am I replacing a bill I already pay, or buying a maybe? Replacing a $29/month subscription with a $69 one-time payment is a clear win with a known payback period. Buying a tool for a project you have not started yet is a fantasy purchase. Almost every regretted LTD lives in the second category.

2. Where does my data go if this shuts down? Check for CSV export, API access, or standard-format output before buying. A tool that holds your data hostage is a liability even while it is alive. This matters more than the feature list.

3. Is the company answering questions on the deal page? Founders who reply thoughtfully to critical comments in the deal's Q&A tend to still be around years later. Founders who answer only the easy questions, or vanish after launch week, tell you something. This is a surprisingly reliable signal, and it costs you ten minutes.

4. Would I pay the monthly price for this if the deal did not exist? If the answer is no, the discount is irrelevant. Ninety percent off something you do not need is still money spent on something you do not need.

Three deals currently on our directory that clear all four for most small businesses: Selldone if you are paying Shopify monthly, Brizy WordPress if you are paying for a page builder, and WriterZen if an SEO subscription is eating your budget. Each replaces a recurring bill rather than adding a new tab.

Who AppSumo is genuinely great for

  • Bootstrapped founders and solo operators. You have more time than cash, and every recurring bill you remove extends your runway.
  • Agencies and freelancers. You can build a client-ready stack once and amortise it across every project. This is where the returns are largest.
  • Anyone with an existing subscription stack to audit. If you are paying for six tools monthly, at least two probably have a viable one-time alternative — our roundup of the best lifetime software deals of 2026 is a good place to check.

Who should stay away

  • Anyone who buys on FOMO. If a countdown timer makes you reach for your card, AppSumo will cost you more than it saves. This is not a small group.
  • Teams that need enterprise SLAs, compliance certifications, or guaranteed support response times. Early-stage vendors generally cannot offer these, and the deal terms will not either.
  • Anyone who cannot name the specific workflow a tool will slot into today. Not next quarter. Today.
  • Businesses where a tool failing would be catastrophic. Payroll, billing, primary customer data. Pay for boring, established software there.

Verdict

AppSumo is a legitimate marketplace with a real refund policy and fifteen years of operating history. It is not a scam, and the platform itself is not where your risk lives.

The risk is vendor-level and entirely manageable with a filter. Buy tools that replace bills you already pay, check the data-export path first, use the 60-day window as a genuine trial with a day-50 reminder, and ignore anything you cannot deploy this month.

Do that, and AppSumo is one of the highest-return purchases available to a small business. Buy on impulse instead, and you will end up with a dashboard full of licences you have never opened — which is, unfortunately, the more common outcome.

Frequently asked questions

Is AppSumo legit? Yes. It has operated since 2010, is based in Austin, Texas, and has a functioning refund process you can trigger yourself from your account dashboard. The legitimate concern is not fraud but vendor survival — individual tools sold on the platform may shut down. Full breakdown here.

How long is AppSumo's refund window? Most deals carry 60 days. The exact window is set per product and shown in the Deal Terms on each listing, and some listings such as digital downloads are not refundable. Always check the listing before buying. More on the refund policy.

Can I get a refund after redeeming the code? Yes. Redeeming the code with the vendor does not void your refund window, which is what makes the 60 days a genuine trial rather than a formality.

Is AppSumo Plus worth $99? It breaks even at roughly three to four deals per year, provided you use the quarterly coupons. Below that you lose money; above $1,000 in annual spend the 10% discount alone covers the fee. See the full scenario maths.

What happens if a tool I bought shuts down? Outside the refund window, you generally lose access. AppSumo Plus members who bought a Select deal receive a 100% refund in AppSumo Credits if the vendor closes within 12 months, compared with 50% for non-members. This is the single strongest argument for the membership.

Are AppSumo deals ever repeated? Frequently. Tools relaunch, and sitewide promotions run several times a year. If a deal is not urgent for you, waiting for a sitewide sale often costs nothing — Sumo Day and AI Week are the two biggest.
