Lifetime Deal Glossary: 40 Terms Every AppSumo Buyer Should Know
Disclosure: SAASTOOLY earns a commission when you buy through some of the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. AppSumo-specific definitions are based on AppSumo's own pages as checked in 2026, including its Help Center (updated August 31, 2026) and seller terms. Programmes and labels can change, so check the current wording on AppSumo.
Lifetime deals come with their own vocabulary, and AppSumo adds a layer on top. Codes or licenses? Select or LaunchPad? What does "price increases in" actually mean, and what is a coverage period?
This glossary defines 40 terms in plain English, grouped by topic. Each entry links to the guide that explains it in depth, so you can use this page as a starting point for anything you are unsure about.

Deal basics
1. Lifetime deal (LTD) A one-time payment for ongoing access to a software product, for as long as the product exists and under the terms of the deal. "Lifetime" means the product's lifetime, not yours. → What is a SaaS lifetime deal?
2. Tier A level of a deal with its own price and limits, such as number of users, projects, credits or contacts. Entry tiers are often deliberately limited; the second tier is frequently the realistic price.
3. Code A redemption code you apply to an account with the vendor. Code-based deals often let you buy more than one code to unlock higher limits. → Codes vs licenses
4. Stacking Buying and applying several codes to the same account to reach a higher tier. Only works on code-based deals, and only up to the stated maximum.
5. License A licence-based deal sells you a single licence at a chosen tier, which you upgrade or downgrade rather than stack. Upgrades are often possible only while the deal is still available. → Codes vs licenses
6. Activation (or redemption) deadline The time you have to redeem a code or activate a licence after purchase, commonly 60 days. Miss it and you can lose access. Redeem on the day you buy.
7. Refund window The period in which you can request a full refund, usually 60 days on AppSumo, though it is set per deal and some products are not refundable. → AppSumo refund policy
8. Deal terms The short box of rules on a deal page: refund window, activation deadline, which updates you receive, upgrade rules and restrictions. Read it before anything else. → How to read a deal page
9. New users only A restriction excluding anyone who has previously had an account, trial or paid plan with the vendor.
10. Future updates clause The deal-terms line describing which updates you receive. "All future updates" is broader than "future updates to the plan you bought", and some AI deals state that future models may cost extra.
Prices and timing
11. Compare-at price The crossed-out "regular" price on a deal page. It is the vendor's own stated comparison, not an independent valuation, so treat it as marketing.
12. "Price increases in…" A countdown meaning the deal continues, but the entry price is scheduled to rise when the timer ends. We watched one deal move from $49 to $59 this way. → The life cycle of an AppSumo deal
13. "Deal ends in…" A countdown meaning this offer is closing. On flash sales it can be a genuine last chance: all five 2026 Taco Day flash deals were sold out three weeks later. → Taco Day recap
14. Sold out / Notify me The deal can no longer be bought. Existing licences continue, and a "notify me" option lets you hear if it returns. Some deals do come back.
15. Last Call A recurring AppSumo event that brings back earlier deals before they change or retire. → AppSumo Last Call
16. Sitewide event A short sale across AppSumo, such as Sumo Day, AI Week, Plus Week, Taco Day or Black Friday, usually with an extra discount and a deeper one for Plus members.
AppSumo membership and labels
17. AppSumo Plus AppSumo's paid membership, with an everyday discount, coupons, exclusive deals and stronger purchase protection. → AppSumo Plus review
18. Plus Exclusive A deal only Plus members can buy, at least for a period. Some open to everyone later, sometimes at a higher price.
19. Extended Access Extra shopping time for Plus members after a public sale ends, such as an additional 24 hours during Taco Day 2026.
20. AppSumo Select A badge for deals AppSumo describes as hand-picked and vetted for usability and functionality. Select products receive the strongest shutdown protection.
21. LaunchPad AppSumo's label for earlier-stage products with early traction, described on deal pages as "chosen for their potential and innovation". Shutdown protection is available for Plus members, not for non-members after the refund window.
22. Radar A programme that, according to AppSumo's seller site, supports only lifetime deals. Radar products are covered only during the initial refund window.
23. Partner-managed listing A listing AppSumo states is managed by the company that built the product and has not been vetted by AppSumo. It does not carry the standard We Got Your Back guarantee, though the listed refund window still applies.
24. We Got Your Back AppSumo's guarantee covering refunds within the refund window and, for covered products that close within a coverage period, compensation in AppSumo Credits. The amount depends on product type and membership. → What happens when a lifetime deal shuts down
25. AppSumo Credits Store credit that can only be spent on AppSumo. Shutdown compensation after the refund window is issued as credits, not cash. Claims must be made within 30 days of a closure announcement.
26. Coverage period How long after purchase shutdown protection lasts: 24 months for Plus Pro Annual members and 12 months for other customers, according to AppSumo's Help Center (August 2026).
27. AppSumo Originals Software built and sold by AppSumo itself, such as SendFox and TidyCal. → How AppSumo's business model works
Community
28. Tacos AppSumo's rating unit. Reviews are scored from one to five tacos instead of stars. Always read the rating together with the number of reviews.
29. Sumo-ling AppSumo's name for members of its buyer community.
30. Q&A The questions-and-answers section of a deal page, where buyers ask and founders reply. Often the most honest part of the page.
Value and risk
31. Payback period The one-time price divided by the monthly bill the tool replaces. Under about six months is a sensible bar for small tools. A tool that replaces nothing has no payback at all. → Lifetime deal vs subscription
32. Total cost of ownership (TCO) The full cost of a tool over time, including setup, maintenance, add-ons and the cost of leaving, not just the price. → Software TCO guide
33. Shelfware Software you bought but never really use. The most common form of lifetime-deal waste. → Audit your lifetime deals
34. Data portability Your ability to export your data in a usable format, such as CSV or through an API. The single most important check before buying any lifetime deal.
35. Vendor lock-in When leaving a tool is so costly or difficult that you stay even if it stops serving you. Often caused by poor data export or deep integrations.
36. Frozen (or diminished) deal A lifetime deal that keeps working but stops receiving new features, which go to paying subscribers instead. One of five ways a lifetime deal can lose value over time.
AI and vendor terms
37. Credits A monthly allowance of AI actions, words, images or other usage included in a tier. Different actions often cost different numbers of credits, so a large-sounding allowance can go quickly. → AI writing lifetime deals
38. BYOK (bring your own key) Connecting your own AI model API key so you pay the model provider directly. It makes AI lifetime deals more sustainable for vendors and more predictable for you.
39. Thin wrapper A tool whose main value is calling an AI model with a prompt. Thin wrappers are the AI deals most likely to cut limits or close, because their costs continue after your one-time payment.
40. Net 60 AppSumo's vendor payment term: vendors are paid about two months after the end of the month in which they made sales, after the refund window, and refunds reduce their share. It is why vendors are motivated to keep you happy during your first 60 days. → How AppSumo's business model works
